The Odyssey and Propaganda

â€Å"Homer’s The Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid as Propagandistic Literature† Propaganda is an amazing social device that impacts crowds through control and specific perspectives and has been seen in history as far back as put down accounts exist. It has been utilized to endorse the ascent of new pioneers, messenger a general public and its predominance, and push ideological motivation to crowds of all foundations all through civic establishments. The strategies that purposeful publicity has been utilized are various and incorporate both composed and spoken types of correspondence to contact the audience.Literature isn't excluded from the utilization of promulgation and Homer’s The Odyssey and Virgil’s The Aeneid are two chronicled sources where it tends to be found. The promulgation found in these writings share likenesses and contrasts which can be looked into and incorporate the estimations of the social orders they speak to, the fates of the legen ds and what each speaks to the general public, and how the foundations of the makers impact what happens in the story with accentuation on legislative issues and traditions. The Odyssey has comparative purposeful publicity to The Aeneid, in spite of the fact that it isn't as promptly clear given the verifiable foundations that prompted the making of each, concerning the political and social changes being experienced around the time The Aeneid was composed. The sort of purposeful publicity that is stressed in The Odyssey is based around the strength and conventions of Ancient Greek society and culture, the need of regarding the divine beings and goddesses, and keeping up ethics that are all inclusive all through society while underlining the significance of the individual. It is shown through the excursion of Odysseus, which starts with the Trojan War and follows with each experience that he encounters on his arrival to Ithaca, finishing on a message of the significance of homecoming w hen he arrives at the shores of his island. The predominance of Ancient Greek society is shown promptly in the backstory of how the Achaeans conquered the city of Troy and won the Trojan War. It stresses the insight and clever of the Achaeans through the case of the Trojan Horse which Odysseus thought of that was utilized to penetrate the city. That the Greeks would develop triumphant toward the finish of an en-year attack over a ground-breaking enemy exhibits the quality of the general public militarily. Social impacts that are influenced by purposeful publicity in The Odyssey exhibit the accomplishments, qualities, and customs of Ancient Greece through references to the perfect individual, legitimate friendliness, and the respecting of the divine beings and goddesses. The person in Ancient Greek society was esteemed as a solid mental and physical individual, who shown tricky and quality, had a silver tongue and exhibited articulate considerations through incredible talk, that coul d deal with any test while making an interminable legacy. The perfect individual was likewise faithful to his family and society, and was devoted to the qualities and customs ingrained in them from birth. This is completely exhibited through Odysseus and his activities, from making the possibility of the Trojan Horse and showing initiative in fight, to outmaneuvering the cyclops Polyphemus, to having a resolute love for his significant other Penelope. Appropriate friendliness is clarified through the admirers that have invaded Odysseus’s home, who butcher his creatures, drink his wine, and made themselves unwanted visitors. Homer can give a case of how not to act when an individual is a visitor in another’s home.Conversely, he shows legitimate cordiality by utilizing the goatherd for instance when he takes a hidden bum that is Odysseus into his home. The regarding of the divine beings and goddesses that were over every human man and ladies was significant in the way of life of Greek society, and this is shown through the occasions of The Odyssey, regardless of whether it is petitioning a divine being for security and prosperity, acting in a path so as not to outrage a divine being, for example, Poseidon, offering penance to respect the heritage of a divine being or toasting the respect of a divine being to pick up their support.Homecoming is the fate that is ascribed to the account of Odysseus and his destiny of coming back to Ithaca underscores the significance of never leaving the spot you were conceived or the ones you love, a worth that was critical to Ancient Greek society. These are on the whole instances of promulgation that was utilized in The Odyssey, which was shared through a rich oral custom that ingrained these goals and excellencies into the center of Ancient Greek society. In contrast to The Odyssey, which started as an oral story and afterward composed sometime in the not too distant future, The Aeneid was composed from the purpose of its creation. It began during a period of political and social change in Roman culture, which impacted its creation as well as the characters and story in it. As per the â€Å"Vita Servii [which] states that the composition of the Aeneid had been attempted at the express proposition of the emperor† (Avery 225). As it was dispatched by Augustus Caesar, this implied it was overflowing with promulgation that underscored the strength of Roman culture, its significance, and its qualities, for example, obligation and honor.Caesar looked to reestablish convention to Rome and help its residents to remember its history when this was critical to the proceeded with thriving of Rome under new principle. Aeneas was utilized a vessel for analyzing these elements of publicity and his excursion fortified these ethics. As a result, Virgil â€Å"draws certain equals to accomplish one of his numerous political points building a national personality for Rome as superb and antiquated as that of Greece† (Bell 228). Virgil offered another point of view on the Trojan War, quickly scattering the Achaeans as rubbish for their duplicity, which strengthened the predominance of the Trojans. He permitted Aeneas to endure the Trojan War, and utilized the divine beings and goddesses that were necessary to Roman religion to make a fate where it was his obligation to establish Rome and achieve its unmistakable quality, regardless of not being altogether mindful this was his destiny. Because of this, Aeneas exemplifies the perfect Roman resident, much as Odysseus typified the perfect Greek person. He is loaded up with obligation and respect and not surrendering in a period of hardship, as when he loses his home of Troy. This is contrasted with the general public of Rome at the hour of composing, which was under new authority and government, and underlined the significance of society staying solid and prosperous. Obligation to the divine beings was underlined through Aeneas and hi s help from Juno, who advised him that he needs to proceed regardless of discovering love in Dido. The significance of Roman culture is inspected when in spite of being harmed in battle, Aeneas can recuperate because of the impedance of Venus, and was skilled a shield that delineated the eventual fate of Rome.In the scenes on the shield, Julius Caesar can be seen, just as the Battle of Actium, and a few other key occasions known at the hour of writing to be basic to the historical backdrop of Rome and which would all be an immediate aftereffect of the obligation that Aeneas was to serve through his devotion. Virgil was viably ready to make a politically determined and bolstered case of purposeful publicity through his composition of The Aeneid, and the essentialness of its creation prompted an increasingly bound together Rome which profited Augustus Caesar in his standard and established Virgil is the archives of history as an incredible epic poet.Propaganda was a helpful apparatus for both Homer and Virgil, and the two men had the option to utilize it in actuality to ingrain and help the crowds to remember The Odyssey and The Aeneid of the strength of the Ancient Greek and Roman social orders just as their qualities and conventions that remained profoundly established in every general public until the defeat of the separate human progress. Guest-Host Relationships in Homers Odyssey - Literature Essay Samples

Odysseus disastrous encounter with the Laistrygones is a useful reference point for analyzing the nature of guest-host relationships in The Odyssey. When it is compared with his arrivals at the lands of the Phaiakians and the hands of the Cyclopes, a fuller picture of Odysseus and the customs of his time emerges; in addition, this reveals some of Homers more adroit storytelling techniques. To regard The Odyssey as the tale of one mans wanderings, as many do, is to ignore half its importance; it is also the story of his stops between wanderings.Initially, all proceeds well when Odysseus sends three men to learn the nature of the Laistrygones: the land, with its smooth roads, seems orderly this, coupled with the placid harbor that greeted their arrival at Lamos, leads the reader to believe that this is a peaceful place and the first person the posse meets is receptive and informative. This information, relayed mutedly by Homer, is reassuring: after their troubles with the Cyclopes and six days of sailing, it seems the voyagers will finally find rest. The positive (by now, more perceptive readers might call it ominous) signs continue a glorious kings home awaits the sailors until the shocking moment when a giantess fills them with horror. The peaceful mood is destroyed by Antiphates wrath, and Death, having stalked the men from the dock, finds a victim. Flight and slaughter ensues, and resourceful Odysseus barely escapes with the remainder of his men. This is more than storytelling Homer has a message hidden beneath the thrill of the narrow getaway. The peaceful setup accomplishes two things: one is obviously in the way of entertainment (the sudden attack on the Ithakans becomes all the more surprising and exciting for his listeners); the other tells the reader about the nature of host-guest relationships.Odysseus has a relentless optimism about his hosts he always approaches them, even in the land of the Cyclopes, which he knows to be lawless. After exploring the cave of Polyphemos, Odysseus men plead with him to steal his goods and set sail; the logician, though, will have none of it: I would not listen to them / not until I could see him, see if he would give me presents. This seems a trifle mad. Here, unlike in Lamos, Odysseus expects to find a man who was endowed with great strength, / and wild, with no true knowledge of laws or any good customs but yet is not the least afraid he is confident that no matter how savage this creature is, he will surely be won over by gifts of food and wine. Decency is assumed. The simplest explanation is that Odysseus wholly believes that Zeus, god of guests, will not fail him. Quixotic Odysseus entreaties Polyphemos blithely, fully expecting cooperation:now in turn we come to you and are suppliantsat your knees, if you might give us a guest present or otherwisesome gift of grace, for such is the right of strangers. Thereforerespect the gods, O best of men. We are your suppliants,a nd Zeus the guest god, who stands behind all strangers with honorsdue them, avenges any wrong toward strangers and suppliants. The underlying message is clear: being a good host is so expected, by so far the default expectation, that despite unmistakable signs that the host is hostile, normally clearheaded Odysseus still expects grace and hospitality. Odysseus arrival at the land of the Phaiakians is similar to the exploration of Lamos both scenes are cautious; the men are diplomatic. Odysseuss plea to Nausikaa is crafty. Although Odysseus employs a different supplication technique here than at Polyphemos cave, it hardly seems necessary; here, in a civilized land, the response feels guaranteed. A supplication to the bloodthirsty Laistrygones would have been useless. Alkinoà ¶s responds to Odysseus admirably, and the weary traveler is without want for the duration of his stay. The drastic difference in outcome is attributable solely to the character of those that are supplicate d.By the end of the encounter with the Laistrygones, lamentations should well up in emotionally invested readers but not only for the murders of Odysseus men. Something besides life has been destroyed: a basic fabric of generosity, hospitality and good will that the voyagers deserve has been betrayed. If Odysseus and his men found welcoming hosts at every turn, the latter would lose their significance they would be taken for granted. By building the travelers hopes at each new location and sometimes dashing them savagely, Homer elevates the status of the good folk who do receive them in peace and give food and shelter. The relations between guest and host form the core of The Odyssey; their range from eight years of divine food and loving to cruel death reveals that no matter what horrors a man encounters at war and on the open sea, a crueler fate could await in another mans home.

Deregulation And The Rebirth Of An Industry - 1564 Words

I. Deregulation and the Rebirth of an Industry Before the 1980s you couldn’t find many payday lenders, if a person was short on cash and needed it immediately they had to go their local pawn shop, or if incredibly desperate a loan shark. The pawn shop provided a pay-it-back or lose it system which left people without their personal effects, but they were free from debt. The loan shark on the other hand charged extremely-high interest rates, and usually under illegal conditions. Both of these options provided struggling Americans with short-term financing, a simple solution that will help them solve the liquidity problems. Much like a bank who received loans from other banks when they run into liquidity issues, people should have access to†¦show more content†¦Take out the loan and pay it back with your next paycheck. On the surface it sounds like an appealing alternative not having electricity or food for the week. The downside comes in the fine print. According to Ch eck Into Cash’s website, a single payment $100 loan can result in 260.71% to 782.14% in interest. I may just be a college student, but I can see that this kind of lending is both predatory and nearly impossible to repay. This is why payday lenders are often referred to as â€Å"predatory†, because they prey on the short-term needs of their clients to create long-term returns that in many cases never go away. As mentioned earlier, this is not a phenomenon of the late 20th century, rather it is merely a rebirth of an industry that thrived during the Great Depression. During the Great Depression loan sharks charged from 240% to 1000% for short-term loans, sound familiar? When the interest rates are this high they are referred to as â€Å"the purchase of wages† because what the institution is effectively doing is purchasing the future wages through this high interest rate. This begs the question, why do they exist, what economist world view calls this mode of financ ing productive and fair to the markets, what are the benefits? III. The Benefits to Payday Lending There must be some benefits to payday loans, why else would have legislation passed that allowed banks to charge their interest rate of choice. Question: Discuss about the Special Edition on Teaching and Learning. Answer: Introduction: Self assessment tools are often considered as potential weapons in understanding our own skill and competencies and developing different communication traits for uninterrupted business output. These tools help us by making us identify our own capabilities and thereby help us to know where we have to improve so that we can maintain an uninterrupted communication in workplace. Person who has proper communication skills can not only express himself completely getting greater scopes of exposure but will also help to strike a very good conversation with the opposite person thereby leading to development of successful bonding and relationship building. This often leads to developed team work, management of multiculturalism. Individuals with proper communication skills has high levels of reputation as a empathetic and compassionate colleague or leader and is also capable of handling different critical situations effectively with grace and confidence. Therefore, the essay would help me to us e 5 diagnostic tools which will bring out my negative aspects in communication and will in turn help me to search literature helping me to gain ideas about how to overcome the. It will also have action plans which I will follow to reach my goals of developing my communication skills. Johari window is one of the most important self assessment tolls which help to provide a large amount of information about our own traits in workplace and what others think of us. This tool mainly has four important plots called quadrants. The first one is called the open area which describes the individual trait of me which is known by me and also by others. The second plot is the blind area where the traits I have are known to others but not known to me. The third one is the hidden areas which states of the traits which are known to me but are hidden to the others. The fourth plot is called the unknown area where the traits that I have are neither known by me nor are also known to others. Form the first quadrant I came to know that I have the traits like being hardworking, open minded, organized, caring, challenging, friendly, active and also self assertive. Form the second quadrant I came to know that I am sensitive, sentimental and at the same time lack patience. In the third qua drant, I came to understand that I like to observe things with great concentrations and thoroughly. I also noticed that I am self conscious and like to take up challenges. The fourth quadrant revealed that although I am trustworthy and spontaneous in any communication approaches but lack confidence. The second tool of assessment of my communication style that I have selected is the communication style questionnaire. This is one of the best tolls for an individual to reflect upon the different communication skills, habits as well as skill that he has mastered in the years of his profession and also shows that areas where he needs further improvement. The score displayed by it over gives an insight that how effective the skills are and also helps to know whether they needed any improvement. From this tool, I came to understand that I am coming under the pragmatist group. The individuals of these groups continually try to develop different new ideas so that they can try out different ways to reach goals and objectives. The negative aspect of the members of this group is that they are quite impatient. However, at the same time, they are down to earth and also harbor different sorts of problem solving skills which help them to handle different strenuous situations effectively. The third toll which can be used here is the assertive questionnaire. This tool is of great importance in helping the individual to reflect his interpersonal skills which help in handling different personal as well as professional issues and developing a proper view point towards it. The questionnaire has mainly 60 questions which needs to be answered in two options such as either rather no or in rather yes. These answers would then be added in specific columns which in turn will help us to reach the final results. The four main groups under which an individual is allotted after the tests are Manipulation, Aggressive attitude (attack), Passive attitude (flight) and Harmonious assertiveness. To my very little knowledge, I realized that I belong to the category of flight as the graphs respond to mine traits in the flight section only. Avery negative aspect was reflected through it. It made me know that I mainly believe in an escapist manner trying to avoid the critical situation and ra ther than trying out new strategies to combat the challenges, I try to remain satisfied. This made me realize that I lack patient in my listening skills and also have lack of confidence in feedback giving and receiving skills and also during any conversations with colleagues. However, instead of fighting the issues I tried to avoid the issues which therefore have affected my career largely. Therefore coming under flight category had been just for me. The fourth tool that I used for the reflection assignment is called the communication skill assessment quiz. This quiz has 25 important questions and is mainly a form of an online test which helps in generating the result after the 25 questions each giving four options are attempted and the submit button is pressed. It immediately provides a result which gives the individual a detailed description of the traits he possesses at an interpersonal level. This test showed that I have issue in my confidence level while communicating mainly in feedback receiving and giving skill. Although I have many positive traits, some negative aspects which was also noted was my impatient approach both in listening and conversation skills. Another important tool which was also found of importance is the IABC Communication Skills Assessment Tool. This tool is more useful in identifying the barriers while completing assignments set by leaders or managers. This is mainly based on the target and also a priority which are set by supervisors. The individuals need to give themselves score from 1to 5 and thereby try to look for the score in each of the domains. Although good marks were achieved by me in different domains, however I could not do well in the client management domain. The main reason is that I failed to handle my comet confidently and did not take their inputs efficiently for which I was criticized. I had got fewer marks in the priority and target set by leaders. I failed in establishing a proper relation with my clients as I neither heard them properly due to my inpatients and lack of confidence to engage in proper conversations and feedback giving and receiving skills were the main reason. From the entire discussion, I have identified two important issues in my communication procedures which I need to correct. The first one is my impatient attitude which often creates a barrier in my effective listening skills. I often cut down my colleagues and others halfway or do not listen to them patiently and genuinely for which my performance also gets affected and others develop negative feelings about me as well. Another issue is that I also seem to lack confidence in face to face communication. I often get nervous in providing feedback giving and receiving skills. Therefore in order to be successful in my career and develop my professional attributes I also need to work with my interpersonal communication skills and develop the best attitudes and workplace traits. The first incidence, which I need to mention, took place during my placement years. I was assigned as a team member of five individuals where my mentor who was an old yet experienced intern described each and every details of the work by calling us individually. However, I was absent on the day and the next day I wanted to know about it. I grew so impatient that without meeting the main leader I went on asking all my colleagues who had different sets of tasks. I grew so confused after hearing the task, I got nervous. Moreover after meeting my leader also I did not hear him patiently for which I missed many important points and cut him short saying I have understood. Ultimately this had a negative effect on my work and my assignment got poor marks. The second incidence was when I was sent to a meeting with the client where I was representing my company. Although I had prepared myself well and all the important documents with me, I got nervous when I faced the clients. I could not receive their feedbacks effectively and neither could I provide them effective feedback on the suggestions they made on my presentation. I got nervous and my confidence broke down. Moreover I developed complexes thinking that they are developing negative feelings of me which further affected my feedback giving and receiving skills. As a result I missed out on the deal or which my company faced huge losses. Researchers in their articles have clearly stated that hearing is a form of physical ability but listening is a skill and therefore every individual should have the urge to develop the skill to maximize their boundary of professional development (Arnold, 2016). In simple terms listening skills allow an individual to gather meaning from the speakers statements and thereby take interventions accordingly whether to complete a given ask or to develop bonding or understanding between the two stakeholders. Researchers like Purdy and Manning (2015) have stated that an individual who has good listening skills are more productive at work in comparison to those who does not have. An individual always listen to have proper listening skills so that they can better understand the assignments given to them and also develop an idea about what is expected from them by the managers, leaders or employers. The capability to listen as well as to comprehend gives the individuals allowance to build a very strong rapport with the different coworkers and also with clients and managers (Harris, 2017). The employers and managers also tend to develop confidence in the workers. Moreover researcher like Roebuck et al., (2015) is of the opinion that the workers who have very good listening skills are able to maintain a better track record in resolving problems with different types of customers. Moreover they are also of the opinion that workers who listen properly tend to work in a better team based environment. Such individuals will never be a part of miscommunication and hence the work which will be provided by him will rightly fit into the entire task in comparison to those who misunderstand. Many researchers like Knesek (2015) have provided a number of recommendations in their paper about how an individual can develop his skills of listening. The listener should try to make eye contact to the speaker while the later is speaking. This makes the speaker believe that he is properly heard. The listener should also not interrupt the speakers as studies suggest that complete listening to the speakers reduces several of the questions without the need to ask them. Moreover the listeners should also repeat the facts told by the speaker in different words in order to confirm that he had understand it right, it reduces the chance of misunderstanding (Block, 2016). The listener should also control the body language by properly sitting while listening as it implies that the listener is properly providing attention to the speaker. Some of the important aspects that should be avoided are that biasness or prejudices as well as fear, anger and worry should not come in the way of the conversations. Researchers are of the opinion that confidence allows individuals to speak with smartness as well as concisely. Such an individual shows more clarity in his conversations. Professionals who are much confident can communicate much more effectively and can influence their clients by making them believe what they want them to know (Bonnet et al., 2015). Proper confidence helps them to communicate with much ease and hence, can help them to tackle many difficult situations effectively which can never be solved by an individual who lacks confidence. Researchers are of the opinion that stable and clear tone should be harbored by an individual to appear confident and should strictly avoid whispering and stammering while giving feedbacks. This mainly reflects self assurance within the speaker which earns him respect from the opposite person (Deng, Thomas Trembach, 2014). Confident eye contact is very important while giving and receiving feedback. However it should be remembered that confiden t eye contact is not persistent stare but an actual meeting of the eyes when an individual speak and make points. An interesting point made by authors Holtzman Kraft (2016) is that listening to others attentively is also a way of gaining confidence by expanding the view of the worlds and thereby bridging differences between different stakeholders at the same time of demonstrating that an individual view point is strong enough to take in other points of views. Speaking from the heart is one of the importance aspect f gaining confidence while providing feedback and care should be taken that self confidence should never be aggressive both in times of taking and giving feedbacks. A person who is confident in his communication skills can hear what the opposite person is saying, respond to them and also at the same time can maintain their own point of view or can even make compromises to solve real problems. Moreover, learning to use proper humor, expressing gratitude, apologizing when w rong and acknowledging others while giving and receiving feedback will also increase the confined in the individuals making him success in his conversations (Chaou et al., 2017). The action plan that is to be taken should follow the smart objectives. Smart objectives mean that the goals which would be taken should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. The two goals that would be set are development of effective listening skill and patience. The other goal would be to develop confidence and also at the same time learn proper feedback receiving and giving skills. To describe them specifically, I should join workshops in the community so that I can attain classes on developing communication skills. I can also attain various discussion forums at the university so that I can receive feedbacks on my development of the skills. I will also reflect on my experiences to understand whether I am developing patience and confidence in my communication. The mentor would help me to identify my drawbacks and will instruct me accordingly. I will also visit the library and read several journal articles to help myself overcome the communication issues and com e out victorious. I will also try to go through different communication models given by eminent researchers to help me understand the basic easily. I will also read the books of motivational speakers and thereby learn how perseverance, patience and confidence could be developed in a stepwise manner. The objectives are measurable. I will provide myself with evaluation time during which I will try to reflect on the skills developed and see how much in am being able to change my skills towards betterment. All the initiatives would be measurable as my own efforts would be reflected in my regular professional lives; decrease of any wrong events due to communication issue will measure the success rate that I hope to achieve. The objectives are easily attainable as all the initiatives which are taken are not costly but are affordable by me. Moreover, not any of the initiatives requires extensive permission from authorities or would not also make me miss university classes. Therefore they a re attainable and no excess expenditure or excess of heavy timing is required. All the objectives are also relevant s their outcome is associated with betterment of the communication skills. The better is concentrate and work upon the strategies will dedication, the faster these initiatives will provide me with good results. The objectives are also timely that is it would be completed within 6 months. References: Arnold, J.
